Sustainable Development

Optimizing wood use,
a constant concern

At Matra, sustainable development is part and parcel of wood product manufacturing. We understand the importance of taking steps to preserve our environment, and we do it concretely every single day. We are committed to meeting today’s needs without compromising the availability of natural materials for future generations.

Choosing sustainable
wood processing
solutions

Trees are our primary raw material. Considering the number of years needed for a tree to mature and grow big enough to be used to fabricate products, we naturally want to maximize the use of every last piece. That’s why we make sure to give our byproducts a new life.

Each year, we recover over 18,000 tons of wood byproducts from our manufacturing processes. Some of those byproducts are turned into energy for drying. The rest are processed into pellets and shavings for animal bedding, as well as pellets for wood heating. Pellets are known to be an efficient and eco-friendly source of energy, especially since they reduce the dependence on fossil fuels for other types of heating.

Water Recuperation

Each year, we recuperate and treat hundreds of thousands of liters of water used in our production processes, ensuring that we minimize waste and reduce our environmental footprint. Our advanced water treatment systems allow us to responsibly manage this vital resource by filtering and purifying water for safe reuse or discharge. In 2025, we are taking our commitment even further with a major investment in a state-of-the-art water treatment system at our Beauceville facility. This new system will significantly enhance our capacity to clean and recycle water, reinforcing our dedication to sustainable manufacturing and environmental stewardship.
